Poetry: The Best We’ve Never Seen

I stand before you to praise our glorious leader,
a man of unmatched grace.
Though, truth be told,
I’ve never actually seen his face.

They say his vision is vast,
his footsteps bold and grand.
I wouldn’t know, of course—
I’ve never walked his land.

But the radio says he’s working,
so we must applaud the sound
of a man who builds great bridges
where no rivers can be found.

He’s a giant amongst men,
a shelter from the storm.
At least that’s what the posters say
and it keeps our spirits warm.

I’ve never stood within his rooms
or watched him draw a breath,
yet I would swear his policies
save us all from death.

Is he tall? Is he short?
Does he exist at all?
It hardly matters, friends—
just look at his portrait on the wall!

He gives us light in darkness.
He fills our cups with wine.
Though my own taps are running dry,
I’m sure his plans are fine.

So here’s to our great President,
the best we’ve never seen—
the finest, most magnificent ruler
there has ever been!
