Obari Gomba joins rank of professors at the University of Port Harcourt

THE University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt, has promoted Obari Gomba, PhD to the rank of prosessors in its recent promotion exercise. Gomba has been an Associate Professor of the Faculty of Arts of the university. His promotion to the rank of professors has been widely hailed as deserving for the widely published and award-winning writer and academic. He is also the Vice President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).

Only two years ago in 2023 he won Nigeria’s most prestigious writing prize, The Nigeria Prize for Literature 2023 (drama category) worth USD$100,000 with his work Grit. Prior to that in 2022, he won the Pan-African Writers Associations’ Prize for Poetry with his work The Lilt of the Rebel. Gomba won Association of Nigerian Author’s poetry prizes in 2017 and became an Honorary Fellow Writing of the presitgious University of Iowa, US.

In a congratulary message signed by the Secretary of Abuja Chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors’ President, Mr. Uthman Qasim, expressed ANA Abuja’s heartfelt congratulations to the association’s National Vice President, Professor Obari Gomba, “on his recent promotion to the rank of professorship. This achievement is a testimony to his exceptional intellect, dedication, and tireless contributions to the world of academia and literature. As an eminent scholar and leader, Professor Gomba has not only excelled in his professional endeavours, but has also served as a beacon of inspiration for many within and beyond the academic community.”

Qasim said ANA Abuja looked forward to receiving Professor Gomba at its upcoming Reading and Writers Dialogue event in April, adding, “It will be an honour to celebrate his achievements in person and engage with him on matters that continue to shape the literary landscape. We also wish you the very best in your future endeavours, with hopes of celebrating you as a future Nobel Laureate!”
