Canadian Afrobeats musicians storm Lagos, Abuja for concerts

AFRICAN Women Acting (AWA), an Ontario, Canada-based non-for-profit organization, is ramping up preparations for its 2023 Nigeria tour featuring two top-tier Afrobeats artistes in live performances in two major cities. Scheduled for Lagos and Abuja, the music concert will parade Sonia Aimy and Jbwai – Afro-Canadian Afrobeats singers based in Ontario. The Lagos concert will take place on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at the iconic Freedom Park, Broad Street, Lagos Island. Time is 6pm prompt, while the Abuja show is billed for December 9, 2023 at Mambaah Bistro, 52 Libreville Crescent, Wuse 2. Time is 6pm.

Also in the line-up of events will be a highly-anticipated and interactive workshop and music concert with the students and staff members of the Department of Theatre Arts and Music, Lagos State University (LASU). The LASU engagement is slated for Monday, December 11, 2023 from 1pm at the Ojo campus of the institution.

“Nigeria is an amazing country full of wonderful people who are committed to their dreams,” said Sonia Aimy, Afrobeats artiste and founder/CEO of African Women Acting. “The AWA 2023 Nigeria tour is an opportunity to entertain and interact with the Nigerian people, to share a music genre whose roots are firmly established in the Nigerian soil.”

Sonia Aimy continued, “Our performances at the various cities will enable us bring Canadian talents to Nigeria and give room for a cultural exchange programme in subsequent years. Nigeria is the Mecca of Afrobeats. I think any artiste who wants to explore the medium is indebted to visit the motherland.”

Jbwai

For Jbwai, “performing in Lagos and Abuja is a dream come true. It’s a lifetime opportunity bringing back home the music genre that is rocking the music scenes across the globe to its people whose pulse and energy are felt in the lyrics. I can’t wait to share the Canadian version of Afrobeats with Nigerians. I can’t wait to hit the stage in Lagos and Abuja. Nigeria is home to me!”

African Women Acting (AWA) is a pan-African not-for-profit organization promoting women’s issues, developing, empowering, and mentoring artists through cultural initiatives. The NGO also intends to increase the public understanding and appreciation of African traditional and contemporary arts through artistic production i.e. music, theatre, spoken word, digital media art, visual-arts and AWA festival held annually at the Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. The organisation’s priority is focused on Afro-Canadians, with collaborations with other ethnic groups and counterparts.

In partnership with Showbuzz Media, Culture Advocate Caucus, ActionAid International, Freedom Park, Mambaah Bistro, Victor Olopha Studios, to mention but a few, the music concert in two Nigerian cities are targeted at music lovers and aficionados who appreciate and enjoy quality music. It is an opportunity to enjoy Afrobeats with some foreign sparks. Guests will be glad they did.
