‘Kwararafa’, an eco-critical performance hits Lagos stage at Goethe-Institut

THIS Thursday at Goethe-Institut, Lagos, at 2.30pm, Abuja Poetry Troupe and Benue Poetry Troupe will stage Kwararafa: The Spirits Want a Home, an eco-critical solo performance on stage in what promises a theatre poetry show. The performance is themed on the connection between culture and the environment, and the organizer believes that eco-critical discourse through arts is crucial at this point when climate change threatens global ecology.
According to the chief performer Oko Owi Ocho Afrika, “In the face of the challenges with the environment, there is also the threat to culture, as most of our African cultural practices are tied to the environment through trees, rivers, earth, animals, and nature in its entire splendour. But with destruction of the earth mostly caused by human’s negligence, our cultural practices are also threatened. Hence the need to use art as a medium to speak for our earth, because if the earth speaks for itself, the words would bite hard on our existence.”
The programme which will feature a panel session on how climate change connects with gender, class, and culture, will hold in Lagos at the Goethe-Institut, 7 Anifowoshe Street, Victoria Island, Lagos on Thursday, July 18 2024. Young performers will respond through their songs and music to issues of climate justice in the African discourse, and the event will be crowned with Oko Owi Ocho Afrika’s command solo performance. Oko, the Creative Director of Abuja Poetry Troupe and author of We Will Sing Water, notes that he was inspired by a post from Igba Ogbole, and the poems of Dr. Adewumi Oluwadiya to create this special, must-see performance.
The event is organized in partnership with SEVHAGE Literary and Development Initiative/SEVHAGE Publishers, CORA, Poets in Nigeria (PIN), Kairos Tablets and Scrolls, ISHRAI, CEE-Hope, Poet Cult, 2’WYTH Lens, VIC Adex 60 Seconds Poetry.
