ROOTZ Vybez 1.0, a cultural exchange project promoting Jamaican music and culture globally, will be in Nigeria from October 13 — 23. Promoted by Yaad, a Music Ent and Mining Gold Studio, Roots Vybez will see a group of Jamaican artists, producers, and industry professionals connecting and networking with their Nigerian counterparts and share their experiences. The visiting team is hosted by Lagos-based Culture Advocates Caucus (CAC).
Jacqueline Nelson, CEO of Yaada Music Ent and founder of the Rootz Vybez initiative, who is passionate about promoting Jamaican music and culture, stated: “I’m thrilled to see Rootz Vybez come to life. This initiative is about more than just music – it’s about cultural exchange, collaboration, and growth. We’re excited to share our Jamaican culture with Nigeria and learn from their rich cultural heritage as well.”
Nelson said she saw an opportunity to create a platform for artists and industry professionals to connect, and learn from each other, and grow.
She continued, “The trip will feature a range of activities, including ‘A Day of Reggae’ which was added to the one-week long celebration festival honouring the legacy of Fela Kuti, the creator of the afrobeat and freedom fighter of Nigeria, a musical workshop with Tenstrings School of the Art’s, and a visit to the Performing Musician Association of Nigeria (PMAN), and tours of historical sites. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with Nigerian artists, producers, and industry professionals, and learn about the local music industry.
“We’re looking forward to a fruitful and enriching experience,” says Nelson. “We believe that music has the power to bring people together and transcend borders. Rootz Vybez is just the beginning of what we hope will be a long and fruitful partnership between Jamaica and Nigeria.”
Outlines of itineraries of the troupe will include performances at Freedom Park and The New African Shrine, workshop at Tenstrings Music Institute and tour of Fela Kuti’s home and Kalakuta Museum.
Collaborating in organising the tour are Yaad A Music Ent Limited, Mining Gold Studio, and Cultural Advocate Caucus, with the support of Cau Nigeria Ruge Entertainment, Brownhill Radio, Freedom Park Lagos and The New Afrikan Shrine. It also enjoys the support of Lasco Foods, Ruge Entertainment and Fam House Music.
