ANA Abuja to host Olusegun Obasanjo as February guest author

THE Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) will host former President Olusegun Obasanjo as its guest author for the February 2025 Reading/Writers Dialogue! The former two-time leader of Africa’s most populous country is also a prolific writer with many publications to his credit that span his foray in the military and Nigeria Civil War and other leadership challenge. With an illustrious career and a wealth of experience, our guest will discuss his contributions to literature and how the written craft can enable and sustain progress in nation-building. The event will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the Mamman Vatsa Writers’ Village, Mpape, Abuja, by 1:00pm, according to a statement by Secretary, ANA Abuja, Mr. Uthman Qasim.
Born in the picturesque village of Ibogun-Olaogun, President Obasanjo’s life story is one of resilience and commitment to service. From joining the Nigerian Army and rising through the ranks to becoming a Major, through playing a pivotal role in historical events during and after the Nigerian Civil War, his dedication to the nation and the international community has been unwavering. Indeed, after his time as Head of State from 1976-1979 and his subsequent transition to civilian politics, Obasanjo, who retired from the army as a General, became known as a champion of democracy, steering Nigeria towards free elections and advocating pan-African unity.
During the dialogue, President Obasanjo will share insights from his experiences, emphasising how writers can ignite social change and promote a sense of responsibility within their communities. He will also talk about the significance of Africa’s first presidential library—his vision, which serves as one of Africa’s largest repository of knowledge and history, empowering future generations and encouraging accountability among leaders.
To complement this month’s dialogue, a panel session featuring Professors Onyinye Nwagbara, Razinat Muhammed, and Emeka Aniagolu is being planned. These academics will speak on their significant contributions to literature, governance, and societal upliftment. The engaging panel will join the guest author and the audience to provide diverse perspectives on the power of words in nation-building, reflecting on the myriad ways writers can challenge the status quo by advocating for justice, peace and progress.
