Wole Soyinka @90 celebration berths in Port Harcourt with lecture on literature, activism

THE Nigerian Literary Society and The Book Section, Port Harcourt Club, will host a birthday lecture in honour of Prof Wole Soyinka who clocks 90 on July 13, 2024. The theme for the lecture is ‘Wole Soyinka @ 90: The Nexus between Literature and Justified Activism’. The lecture is to honour and also appreciate Soyinka’s immense contribution to literature and activism which spans many years till date. July 27, 2024 at Port Harcourt Club, 31,Forces Avenue, Old GRA, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Time is 10am prompt.
Soyinka’s writing spans all genres and spiced with his human rights activism. A statement signed by the Curator, Nigerian Literary Society (NLS) and the Captain of The Book Section, Mr. David Chukwueke and Mrs. Judith Obomanu, respectively, said, “His list of works are enormous. However, to name are few there are Trials of Brother Hero, The Man Died, You Must Set Forth at Dawn, Death and the King’s Horseman, Brother Jero’s Metamorphosis, The Lion and the Joel, Ake, etc. He is the first Subsaharan African to win the Nobel prize for Literature. He does not keep quiet in the face of intimidation, human rights violations abrogation of freedom of speech, etc. Therefore, it is an honour and immense pleasure for the Nigerian Literary Society (NLS) and The Book Section of Port Harcourt Club to hold this birthday lecture in honour of our own literary statesman, and to show our love for literature.”
The statement further added that the former Commissioner for Information, Rivers Syaye and former Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dame Ibim Semenitari, will deliver the birthday lecture on the nexus between literature and justified activism theme.
