AGY Yakasai’s ‘Labarina’ tells story of resilience, struggle for artistic freedom

UNCHAINED Vibes Africa (UVA) is set to premiere a compelling new music video by AGY Yakasai on April 3, 2025 titled ‘Labarina’, a statement by UVA’s Advocacy Coordinator, Prince Adeola Goloba, said. This virtual premiere, streaming exclusively on UVA’s social media platforms, is more than just a release—it’s a statement.
AGY, a musician who was imprisoned for alleged defamation after a satirical song about a governor of Kano State, uses this video to reclaim his voice. Arrested and denied proper legal representation, AGY was sentenced to two years jail term. But with the intervention of UVA and organizations like the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA), the artiste was released after spending one year behind bars. The injustice AGY suffered remains a stark reminder of the risks artists face.
The music video, produced by Unchained Vibes Africa, takes audiences through AGY’s gripping journey—from his unjust arrest to his experiences in court. It also sheds light on the growing hardships Nigerians endure today. Beyond his personal story, the video speaks to a larger fight: the right of artists—musicians, actors, and digital creators—to express themselves without fear of persecution.
“As an organization committed to defending free expression, we believe this project is more than just music,” declared the executive producer of UVA, Ayodele Ganiu. “It is a message. It highlights the resilience of artists in the face of censorship and oppression while calling for a society where creativity is not criminalized.”
The video premiere will not just be an artistic event, but a step forward towards artists finding their voices and reclaiming their creative license for the benefit of society. The public is enjoined be part of the premiere on Thursday, April 3, 2025 for the exclusive virtual premiere on UVA’s social media channels and be a part of history.
