IN a historic move, the UN Tourism delegation has arrived Ekiti State, Nigeria, to advance the development of Ekiti State Tourism Master Plan. This marks the first instance in which the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is extending its expertise to assist a state government in the creation and implementation of a Tourism Development Master Plan, according to the Director-General of Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism, Barrister Wale Ojo-Lanre.

The distinguished delegation, led by the Deputy Director of Technical Cooperation and Silk Road Department of the UN Tourism, Marcel Leijzer, also included Messrs Okemini Dike and Precious Ovahabonosa from the international tourism and ministry of tourism. The delegation was warmly received with a culturally rich performance by the Ekiti Hip-Hop band, Elekiti Boys, which added to the spirited welcome orchestrated by Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development.

Ambassador Wale Ojo-Lanre Esq., who heads the Bureau of Tourism Development, led the Executive Secretary, Barrister Adegboyega Morakinyo, Special Assistance on Tourism, Peculiar Ekiran, tourism officer, Dolapo Ogunleye Adewumi, as well as Mariam Ajibola and Bernard Udensi in welcoming the UN Tourism guests. In a symbolic gesture, Ambassador Ojo-Lanre presented Mr. Leijzer with a ‘Visit Ekiti’ cap, which he enthusiastically wore, signalling a palpable excitement for the initiative.

For Governor Biodun Oyebanji, “This collaboration with the UNWTO signifies our commitment to enhancing Ekiti’s tourism sector. We are optimistic that this master plan will unlock the full potential of our state as an attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists.”

The delegation’s visit is expected to include a series of high-level meetings, field visits, and stakeholder consultations over the coming days to lay the groundwork for the comprehensive Tourism Master Plan.

And at Efon Alaye in Ekiti State, the United Nations Tourism delegation, which arrived in Ekiti State last Saturday, experienced an extraordinary phenomenon that captivated their hearts and minds. Under the guidance of Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development, led by Barrister Ojo-Lanre, the delegation found themselves quite literally walking in the clouds at the breath-taking Oluwaleto Farms, perched atop the majestic Mt. Golgotha, Efon Alaye in Ekiti State.

Mr. Leijzer, along with his esteemed colleagues Precious Ovahabonosa and Okemini Dike, the delegation in Nigeria to lend technical expertise in shaping the Ekiti State Tourism Development Master Plan, were overwhelmed by the stunning natural beauty of Efon Alaye that stole the show and left an indelible mark on their visit.

As the delegation made its way up the winding paths of Mt. Golgotha, a mist enveloped the landscape, creating an ethereal atmosphere that felt like a scene from a dream. The lush green hills rolled majestically into the distance, kissed by clouds that danced low, obscuring the valley below. It was a surreal moment where the air was crisp, and the scent of damp earth mingled with the sweet, fresh aroma of the surrounding foliage. Oluwaleto Farms is a hidden gem in Ekiti that showcases the incredible potential of Ekiti State’s natural beauty and agricultural diversity.

In his remarks, Mr. Leijzer, his voice filled with awe, said, “Experiencing this enchanting landscape firsthand reminds us of the immense value of eco-tourism, not just for visitors but for the local communities as well.”

The delegation engaged in discussions with local farmers and entrepreneurs to explore sustainable agricultural practices that can be integrated into the tourism narrative of Ekiti. The synergy between tourism and agriculture was palpable as the team envisioned a future where local produce could become a focal point for tourism attractions.

As the delegation stood at the summit of Mt. Golgotha, it marvelled at the breath-taking, panoramic view that emerged as the clouds began to lift, revealing vibrant green valleys interspersed with quaint, rural settlements. The sight underscored the profound potential of Ekiti landscape to captivate tourists from around the globe.

Precious Ovahabonosa expressed his passion for the project, stating, “This experience has invigorated our mission. The landscapes here are not just beautiful; they hold stories, culture, and countless opportunities for tourism that respects and enhances the natural environment.”

The visit concluded with an exhilarating walk back down the mountain, the group’s spirit uplifted by the picturesque surroundings and the promise of what lies ahead for Ekiti State tourism. As they prepared to leave Oluwaleto Farms, the mist began to lift entirely, revealing a bright, sunlit day, symbolizing hope and potential for the tourism industry in Nigeria.

With plans for further consultations and development strategies already in motion, the UN Tourism delegation experienced and stored the memories of walking in the clouds, both literally and figuratively. Their experience will undoubtedly be a catalyst for the sustainable growth of tourism in this enchanting corner of Nigeria.

The UN Tóurism Delegation left Efon Alaye and headed for Okemesi Ekiti for an on-the-spot assessment of the Ekiti Parapo War Museum.
