Uyo Book Club to kick-start 2025 season with ‘The Smart Money Woman’ January 25

THE leading reading culture initiative in Nigeria Uyo Book Club has selected The Smart Money Woman: An African Girl’s Journey to Financial Freedom by Arese Ugwu as it’s Book of the Month for January 2025. while announcing the choice of the book, book club founder Dr. Udeme Nana noted that the club’s focus this year is to promote indigenous authors to encourage them to continue to grow Nigeria’s books and knowledge economy.

Dr. Nana then urged club members and intending members to get copies of the book and read in preparation for the physical reading and review session scheduled for Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Shakespeare Hall, Watbridge Hotel and Suites, Uyo. Reputed as the Father of the Book Club movement in Akwa Ibom State for setting up several book clubs across the state, Dr. Nana indicated that the Book of the Month would be reviewed by an accomplished teacher of English language, Mfon Ebebe.

UYO Book Club is an intellectual hub – a community of lovers of reading, writing and discourse with a mision to re-awaken the culture of reading among people at all levels in the society. It believes that through reading, the sensibilities of people can be refined as a foundation for a better society.

In a brief description of herself, the reviewer of The Smart Money Woman, Ebebe wrote on her Facebook page ”as an English teacher, I don’t just teach how to use the language fluently, I pour out 16 years of experience in addition to giving practical skills that would enable my students to navigate life successfully.”

It would be recalled that Uyo Book Club sponsored an attempt by an individual to break the Guinness World Record for Read Aloud in 2023. The club has also hosted several reading promotion events, including the conferences of the Network of Book Clubs and Reading Culture Promoters of Nigeria in Uyo in 2021 and 2022.

Special guests at the January reading session of the club would include the Chairman, Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, Senator Ekong Sampson who is the Patron of Uyo Book Club, the General Manager, Ibom Leadership and Entrepreneurship Development Centre, Mrs. Ekaette Umoh, Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Primary Healthcare Development Commission, Dr. Martin Akpan, among a host of other social reading enthusiasts in Uyo and its environs.
