THE Poetry Reading Club (PRC), Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, has concluded another impactful reading session and announced a new executive team to lead the club forward. In a session held on Wednesday, 17 June 2026 at Fourah Bay College in Freetown, the club gathered senior poets, student writers, and literature enthusiasts under the “throne of poetry” to celebrate growth, practice public reading, and confront the challenge of reviving reading culture among Sierra Leone youth in the age of social media.

The founder and Chief Executive Officer, Madam Elizabeth L.A. Kamara, who also serves as Head of the English Unit and Deputy Vice Chancellor 2 of Fourah Bay College, said the club’s vision remains the restoration of reading culture in Sierra Leone. She noted that her works are already part of the BECE and WASSCE literature syllabus and urged young people to “step up, because poetry is life.” She added that PRC is open for partnerships to expand its reach across campuses and communities.

Students testified to personal growth through the club’s peer critique and public reading format. Alusine Jalloh, a rising student in the English Unit and newly appointed Public Relations Officer, said he joined PRC with no experience in poetry but has since learned to write and perform. Former President Sulaiman Munda Bonnie, lead of Poda-Poda Stories and multiple writing competition winner, reminded members that “writing a piece is a breath to our lives” and praised PRC as a training ground for the country’s next storytellers.

The club also announced its new executive committee. Abubakarr Kamara, known as “Sierra Phoenix,” will serve as President. Bishop Sahr Isaac Peterson was appointed Vice President. Alusine Jalloh takes the role of Public Relations Officer, Sheku Feika was named Secretary General, and Fatima Marrah will serve as Organizing Secretary, alongside other category representatives.

Vice President Bishop Sahr Isaac Peterson pledged to work closely with AB Kamara, Mr. Faika, Jalloh, and all members to realize the club’s vision. “It’s not by mistake to have joined this family. The joy, the time, and pushing are spotlighted. Thank you most graciously,” he said.

The association encouraged students, alumni, and stakeholders to support PRC’s mission to make poetry live again in Sierra Leone, one student, one poem, one session at a time.
