Celebrating ‘Sentinel of Creativity’: A birthday ode to John Asein
By Olufemi Timothy Ogunyejo
IN a time when ideas are the new currency and creativity the lifeblood of nations, there stands a man at the gates, watchful, unwavering, and resolute. Today, we celebrate not just the passing of another year, but the enduring impact of a visionary, a reformer, and a guardian of intellectual integrity, Dr. John Asein.
As Director-General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission, Asein has become a towering figure in Nigeria’s intellectual property landscape and, indeed, a formidable pillar within the Nigerian publishing space and book ecosystem. A man whose leadership is not defined merely by position, but by purpose.
His charisma is quiet yet commanding; his intellect sharp yet accessible; his character, a rare blend of discipline, humility, and unyielding courage. Within the vibrant corridors of the Nigerian International Book Fair, Asein stands tall as a charismatic presence, an intellectual compass whose contributions continue to shape the tone, texture, and triumph of every edition.
At every programme, Asein’s presence is not merely ceremonial; it is catalytic. He brings clarity to conversations, depth to discourse, and direction to deliberations. His unwavering support for the book fair has significantly reinforced its stature as a continental literary beacon.
His impact on the success of the every edition of the Nigerian International Book Fair is both profound and enduring. From policy advocacy to institutional collaboration, from thought leadership to active participation, Asein has consistently strengthened the ecosystem that sustains the fair.
His insights have enriched panel sessions, his guidance has influenced strategic direction, and his leadership at the national level has created an enabling environment where creativity, publishing, and intellectual property can thrive together. Indeed, every successful outing of the Book Fair carries, in no small measure, the imprint of his vision and commitment.

Dr. John Asein
I recall vividly my personal encounters with him across different fora, moments that revealed not just the public figure, but the man behind the mission. At the 2024 Nigeria Publishers Association Conference in Lagos, his keynote address was nothing short of electrifying. His remark with this striking statement, “Think Globally, Act Locally,” still resonates with me till date.
At the conference, he did not merely speak, he ignited minds. He carried the audience through the evolution of publishing with the finesse of a scholar and the passion of a reformer, simplifying complex intersections between artificial intelligence and copyright into actionable insights. His words did not fade with applause; they lingered as a call to action.
Again, during the historic REPRONIG organised copyright licensing webinar of 2025, his voice rang out with clarity and conviction, challenging stakeholders to rise, to build, and to institutionalize systems that protect both access and ownership.
And on that memorable field tour of Nigerian Copyright Commission ( NCC) to Ogun State, I saw firsthand a different dimension of his leadership: a leader in motion, engaging security agencies, fostering collaboration, and strengthening the frontlines in the war against piracy.
Indeed, the fight against piracy under his watch has not been rhetorical, it has been strategic, relentless, and increasingly victorious.
Through intelligence-driven operations, strengthened alliances with agencies like the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, Customs, NSCDC, and EFCC, and a renewed institutional vigor, Dr. Asein has redefined enforcement as both a legal duty and a moral crusade. Piracy, once a rampant shadow over the publishing ecosystem, is now being confronted with light, systematically, decisively, and courageously.
He has taught us that copyright is not merely about law, it is about justice. It is about protecting the sweat of authors, the investments of publishers, and the future of a knowledge-driven nation.
In his hands, the Nigerian Copyright Commission has not only become an institution but a movement, a rallying point for all who believe in the sanctity of creative expression.
Yet, beyond the boardrooms, conferences, book fairs, and enforcement corridors, Dr. Asein remains a man of inspiring simplicity and depth, approachable, thoughtful, and deeply committed to mentoring and nation-building.
His leadership is not loud, but it is lasting. Not forceful, but firmly rooted in vision and values. As you mark another year today, sir, we do not merely celebrate your age—we celebrate your impact, your courage, and your unwavering devotion to the defense of creativity. May the Almighty continue to strengthen you with wisdom beyond measure, courage without fatigue, and grace without limits.
May your voice never lose its fire, your vision never dim, and your legacy continue to echo in the corridors of policy, the pages of books, and the hearts of those you inspire.
Happy birthday, Dr. John Asein, Nigeria’s sentinel of creativity, a defender of dreams, and a true custodian of intellectual light!
