COUNTDOWN TO AFRICA’S BIGGEST LITERARY PRIZE ENTRY DEADLINE BEGINS: 12 DAYS!

OUIDA Bookstore on Oba Dosumu Street, off Isaac John Street, Ikeja GRA, Lagos will be packed when Ad’Obe Obe launches his childhood memoir, Adoka Son: Childhood Memoirs of an African on Saturday, March 23, 2024 @1pm. In the book, the renowned journalist recaptures his childhood memories in fabulous retelling that is stunning and spellbinding for his readers. The launch will also mark Obe’s 77th birthday celebration.

Some dignitaries that will play important roles at the launch include veteran journalist, Mr. Dan Agbese, former Governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke and Mr. Kayode Are, among others. Coordinating the event is editorial cartoonist, Mr. Ebun Aleshinloye.

Many eminent culture workers and journalists have written in praise of Obe’s Adoka Son. Elder Lindsay Barrett calls it “One of the most adventurous books I have ever read” while Chinweizu says, “I’m a great fan of Adoka Son. It’s a well told story, shines a hilarious light on the collision of the triple heritage in the child’s mind.” And for journalist and writer, Mr. Ferdinand Dennis, “It captures with humour, charm and a cast of memorable characters, a Nigerian community on the brink of seismic and irreversible changes,” just as Mary Harper of BBC calls it “Fabulous!… the most amusing opening sentence I have ever read,” just as Nenye Charles of OnlineBookClub says of it, “There’s nothing I disliked about this book… I rate it 5 out of 5 stars! It’s recommended to anyone who seeks to learn the advent of Western Civilization into Africa,” while Aleshinloye describes it as “Pleasantly non-conformist, and authentically original.”

In a review, journalist and writer, Mr. Anote Ajeluorou, who will also hold a conversation with Obe at the launch, says of the book, “Adoka Son is a hilarious book that will keep you laughing at every page you turn. Told in simple but arresting narrative, Obe’s Adoka Son, although a personal memoir, fills an important void in writing Idoma into national and global reckoning, as it reads more like a fictional account the way Obe has rendered his personal story that assumes Idoma national narrative all at once. Around his own person, Obe has packed a punch of interesting Idoma mythology and belief system, with Ogwoja as professional purveyor of enthralling tales who perhaps told the greatest vagina tale. This is an Idoma book you’d read and reread and still be amused and entertained and drawn into the Idoma world.”

Obe is a distinguished writer, journalist, editor, TV producer, and radio broadcaster. He has served as Consultant Editor, Daily Graphic newspaper (Ghana), Editor-in-Chief, Africa Forum Journal, London, Presenter, BBC World Service, Foreign Correspondent, TheGuardian newspaper, London, amongst others. In addition to these roles, Mr Obe is a successful and accomplished agriculturalist and entrepreneur, holding various interests in agriculture and real estate. He graduated with a degree in Philosophy from London University and also earned a Master’s degree in Engineering from Kaulsruche Technical University, Germany.
